چکیده

In this paper, we propose a novel adaptive mesh fitting algorithm that fits a triangular model with G1 smoothly stitching bi-quintic Bézier patches. Our algorithm first segments the input mesh into a set of quadrilateral patches, whose boundaries form a quadrangle mesh. For each boundary of each quadrilateral patch, we construct a normal curve and a boundary-fitting curve, which fit the normal and position of its boundary vertices respectively. By interpolating the normal and boundary-fitting curves of each quadrilateral patch with a Bézier patch, an initial G1 smoothly stitching Bézier patches is generated. We perform this patch-based fitting scheme in an adaptive fashion by recursively subdividing the underlying quadrilateral into four sub-patches. The experimental results show that our algorithm achieves precision-ensured Bézier patches with G1 continuity and meets the requirements of reverse engineering. c © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Adaptive Reconstruction of Freeform Objects with 3D SOM Neural Network Grids

Reverse engineering is an important process in CAD systems today. Yet several open problems lead to a bottleneck in the reverse engineering process. First, because the topology of the object to be reconstructed is unknown, point connectivity relations are undefined. Second, the fitted surface must satisfy global and local shape preservation criteria that are undefined explicitly. In reverse eng...

Fitting smooth surfaces to scattered 3D data using piecewise quadratic approximation

The approximation of surfaces to scattered data is an important problem encountered in a variety of scientific applications, such as reverse engineering, computer vision, computer graphics, and terrain modeling. This paper describes an automatic method for constructing smooth surfaces defined as a network of curved triangular patches. The method starts with a coarse mesh approximating the surfa...

A mesh generation procedure to simulate bimaterials

It is difficult to develop an algorithm which is able to generate the appropriate mesh around the interfaces in bimaterials. In this study, a corresponding algorithm is proposed for this class of unified structures made from different materials with arbitrary shapes. The non-uniform mesh is generated adaptively based on advancing front technique available in Abaqus software. Implementing severa...

Patch Layout from Feature Graph

Structuring of surface meshes is a labor intensive task in reverse engineering. For example in CAD, scanned triangle meshes must be divided into characteristic/uniform patches to enable conversion into high-level spline surfaces. Typical industrial techniques, like rolling ball blends, are very labor intensive. We provide a novel, robust and quick algorithm for the automatic generation of a pat...

Generation of bi-monotone patches from quadrilateral mesh for reverse engineering

Thanks to recent improvements, computational methods can now be used to convert triangular meshes into quadrilateral meshes so that the quadrilateral elements capture well the principal curvature directional fields of surfaces and intrinsically have surface parametric values. In this study, a quadrilateral mesh generated using the mixed integer quadrangulation technique of Bommes et al. is used...
